Olympus Hotel

Client: Steve Morrison
Tacoma, WA
Completed: 1998
Total Area: 47,145 square feet
Type: Renovation / Historic Renovation

The Olympus Hotel was completed in 1918. It enjoyed the roaring 20's as one of the destination hotels at the terminus of the Pacific Railroad and is the last surviving Hotel from that era in Tacoma. Plans for the renovation of the historically registered structure were begun in 1997, as a low-income senior housing project and Historical Tax Credit project. The original hotel had an interior light-well, spanning vertically all the way through the roof. This atrium was in-filled to create additional floor space, and all rooms were completely renovated for individual, affordable housing units. Our goal was to devise creative solutions for the renovation to retain the historical character of the original hotel without making the re-creation apparent to the users. The original cornice, which was heavily damaged in the 1949 earthquake, was re-constructed using steel light-gauge framing and exterior stucco finish.

The Olympus Hotel Apartments consists of 47 units and 9500 square feet of recreated historic commercial space.
